Which resolutions YouTube stores

YouTube generates a fixed set of thumbnail sizes for every upload: maxresdefault (1280×720), sddefault (640×480), hqdefault (480×360), mqdefault (320×180) and default (120×90). Not every video has a maxresdefault. It only exists if the original upload was 720p or higher, which is why that option occasionally returns a blank or placeholder image on older videos.

Common uses

Creators use thumbnail downloads for competitive research (building a swipe file of what performs in their niche), for recreating a thumbnail style, for blog posts and newsletters that embed video previews, and for recovering their own thumbnail file when the original design has been lost.

Copyright, briefly

A thumbnail is part of the copyrighted work it belongs to. Downloading one for private reference, analysis or commentary is generally fine; republishing someone else's thumbnail as your own, or using it to imply endorsement, is not. Use your own thumbnails for anything public-facing.
