How timestamp links work
YouTube reads a t parameter measured in seconds from the start of the video. This tool converts your hours, minutes and seconds into that value and builds the link. Both youtu.be/VIDEOID?t=90 and youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEOID&t=90 work identically.
Timestamps in descriptions become chapters
Separately from links, if you list timestamps in your own video description starting at 00:00, with at least three entries each 10 seconds or longer, YouTube automatically converts them into chapters. Chapters appear on the progress bar, are individually indexable in Google search results, and consistently improve retention on longer videos.
