Watch Time Calculator
The Watch Time Calculator converts your view count and average view duration into total watch hours. Watch time is the single most important metric in YouTube's recommendation system, and 4,000 public watch hours in the past 12 months is a hard requirement for joining the YouTube Partner Program.
Watch time is the single biggest ranking factor in YouTube's algorithm, 4,000 public hours in 12 months is also a Partner Program requirement.
How it works
How to use the Watch Time Calculator
Three steps, no account and nothing to install.
Why watch time outranks view count
YouTube's business is keeping people on YouTube, so its algorithm optimizes for total time watched rather than clicks. A video that gets fewer views but holds people for eight minutes will usually be promoted harder than one with more views that people abandon after thirty seconds. This is why average view duration and audience retention appear so prominently in YouTube Studio.
The 4,000-hour monetization threshold
To join the YouTube Partner Program you need 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 valid public watch hours in the previous 12 months, or 10 million valid public Shorts views in the previous 90 days. Watch hours from private, unlisted or deleted videos do not count, and the 12-month window rolls continuously. Hours earned 13 months ago drop off.

Frequently asked questions
It depends entirely on duration. At 4 minutes average view duration you need roughly 60,000 views; at 10 minutes, around 24,000. Longer, well-retained videos reach the threshold much faster.
No. Shorts views feed the separate 10-million-views-in-90-days pathway. The 4,000-hour requirement counts long-form public watch time only.
No. Only public videos count toward the Partner Program threshold.
50-60% of total video length is strong. Absolute duration matters too, YouTube weighs total minutes watched, so a longer video retaining 40% can outperform a short one retaining 70%.
Yes, repeat views from the same viewer count as watch time, though YouTube filters activity it judges artificial.
